Meet Lily Yang, Founder of BsafeKC.

What does your company do?

BsafeKC creates stylish and discreet non-lethal safety products designed for daily wear or carry. The main feature is the safety alarm, which emits a loud 130 dB sound—enough to startle an aggressor, facilitate an escape, or attract attention from people nearby. Our safety keychains aim to empower users by enhancing their security and providing peace of mind in everyday activities. Find our products online or in university bookstores!

What drew you to entrepreneurship?

My entrepreneurial journey began early, deeply influenced by growing up in a household where business and innovation were part of daily conversations. At the age of 12, I ventured into the world of entrepreneurship with a social media startup selling collectibles. Generating $1,000 in profit each month and attracting over 2 million views on my most popular YouTube video, all before I turned 17.

This early success wasn't just about financial gain; it was a hands-on education in the ups and downs of running a business. These experiences have shaped my approach to studies and future business endeavours, instilling in me a deep-seated belief in the power of dedication, innovation, and the importance of a supportive community in achieving success.

Elaborate on your business venture. What problem are you solving, and what is your unique approach?

Women and minorities seek a fashionable and functional safety solution to enhance security and peace of mind.

Increases in crime rates bring physical insecurities to people’s everyday errands. Travelling to and from work, passing downtown, using transit, or even walking the dog can be mentally exhausting.

My unique approach involves choosing which accessories go on the keychain. Rather than lethal weapons like pepper spray and kubatons, we are focusing on non-lethal items, which are just as effective in a dangerous situation as you would not want to engage in. This differentiation allows our products to enter retail shelves and directly reach consumers.

What are you hoping to accomplish over the summer at ESI?

I hope to solidify the fundamental frameworks, such as business models, legal status, and value propositions, to ensure BsafeKC's growth is in the right direction.

If your business had a theme song, what would it be?

Teenage Dream by Katy Perry

Who is your biggest entrepreneurial inspiration?

I recommend reading Ray Kroc's book Elon Musk and Grinding It Out to gain inspiration. For business growth, I recommend Oversubscribed.
