Meet Tyson Hamilton, the founder of SkyEye Drone Co.

SkyEye Drone Co. is a drone education, training, and licensing partner. SkyEye Drone provides comprehensive drone certification programs covering Basic RPAS, Advanced RPAS, Level 1 Complex, and Aviation Radio (ROC-A). The venture offers online courses and in-person flight reviews, training, and examinations. Its primary consumer base comprises individual hobbyists, industry-related professionals, and school boards.

What drew you to entrepreneurship?

I've always enjoyed keeping busy with projects  I'm passionate about. My entrepreneurial journey began when I was 11, delivering the newspaper. I loved how I could earn more by taking on additional routes, which instilled that connection between hard work and reward. No one in my family has been an entrepreneur before me, so I've been charting my path without that mentorship.  During high school, I had the chance to participate in the JA company program, where I led a meaningful initiative teaching retirement home residents how to use technology to connect with loved ones during social distancing—something that felt especially important during those isolated times. This opportunity was my first leadership experience and helped me hone in on many of the skills I use today in scaling my business.  That same year, I started a small lawn care business, which gave me hands-on experience in sales and taught me the value of quality work. Seeing how a job well done led to referrals and repeat customers was incredibly rewarding and showed me the power of building trust through service. These experiences laid the groundwork for my entrepreneurial mindset today.

Elaborate on your business venture. What problem are you solving? What is your unique approach?

SkyEye addresses Canada's lack of "drone flight schools" and the increasing need for qualified drone operators. The aviation industry, specifically relating to remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), is becoming increasingly complex and regulated, with over 1000 pages of regulations currently in place and new legislation coming into effect in November. Learning to fly a drone with these rules in place can be overwhelming. Our approach combines competitive pricing with easy-to-understand course materials, making drone regulations accessible to everyone. Unlike traditional aviation schools often run by commercial aviation pilots, we're operated by university students who can relate to new learners and explain complex concepts in straightforward terms.

How did you encounter this problem, and why did it appeal to you?

I started SkyEye in late August 2023, a week before my first year at Western. While on a trip to Newfoundland, I was visiting several national parks and noticed numerous signs prohibiting or restricting drone usage. At the time, I had only flown micro drones under the 250-gram licensing threshold and was unaware of the many regulations. After learning about the advanced licensing requirements and obtaining my advanced credentials, I recognized a significant market gap: a shortage of providers offering flight reviews (required for advanced licensing) and training to help recreational and professional RPAS pilots pass their written licensing exams. I have maintained a professional interest in development and real estate— industries with strong ties to the RPAS sector— so starting this business felt like a natural fit. The venture has allowed me to combine my technical knowledge with my business interests and opened doors to valuable industry connections that continue to help me grow personally and professionally.

What are you hoping to accomplish for your start-up at ESI?

Through the ESI program this summer, I plan to rebuild the company website, launch our asynchronous courses, and streamline operations. I also want to strengthen our brand presence and develop partnerships with secondary school Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs.

Do you have a quote or book that inspires you, or encapsulates your entrepreneurship journey?

Poor Charlie’s Almanack by Charlie Munger has recently been my go-to business book. I particularly appreciate its insights on the importance of investing and understanding your circle of competence. This concept has helped me recognize areas in my business where I lack experience and seek the proper support to fill those gaps.
